Thinking about using Aluminum foil in an air fryer?
Aluminum foils are used mainly for baking but some cooking recipes include them for their convenience.
Just wrap your food with foil and throw them in the oven. Once the food’s cooked, we pull it out, then simply toss the foil in the trash.
But can you put aluminum foil in an air fryer, should you do it? And, is it safe?
Yes, you can put aluminum foil in an air fryer. Make sure it doesn’t cover or restrict any airflow. Also, the foil should not touch any heating element. For better efficiency, always put some food before using the fryer so that aluminum foil doesn’t get blown away by the air pressure.
But there are some restrictions that you should know about as a responsible family member.
Aluminum foil isn’t dangerous for health. But it can increase your aluminum content intake by a small amount through the food you cook in the foil. As you are probably eating far below the amount of aluminum that is considered safe, removing aluminum foil from your cooking shouldn’t be necessary.

Yes, when roasting vegetables, parchment paper is better than aluminum foil. People who cook often with aluminum foil (and aluminum pots and pans) risk more exposure than normal to the metal.
The difference in appearance between the two sides of aluminum foil is a result of manufacturing and serves no real purpose. Meaning, whether you are cooking your food with the shiny side up or the dull side up, you’re doing it right. But I use the shiny one as the inner side for reference.
Aluminum foil is far worse for the environment than plastic wrap across the board. However, Aluminum foil can be reused a handful of times. According to Green Living Detective, you’d have to reuse it six times to make it better than plastic wrap.
There are different ways to put tin foil in the air fryer. Some are good while others are not so much. Some of them can damage the air fryer in the long run.
If you’re already using an oven then the first thing that comes to your mind is to put the aluminum foil in the bottom of the air fryer. It’s the most popular area because it’ll collect all the extra cheese, and sauces in it.
But an air fryer fan resides on the bottom part and air circulation is done through it. If put tin foil in the air fryer’s bottom it’ll restrict the airflow and you’ll get unevenly cooked food.
On the other side, the aluminum foil can stick to the bottom part due to extensive heat, and removing a sticky foil from a non-stick-coated surface will do more harm than good. This is not worth the risk.
If your air fryer comes with a basket, then you may be thinking about putting the foil in the basket.
It’s OK to put the foil in the basket, it’ll make the cleanup process easier but there are chances that the foil will get ripped off when you want to remove it from the basket and liquids will drip through it.
Another common practice is wrapping food in foil. For vegetables & meats, it’ll help to retain the moisture and also keep liquid in when marinating.
No doubt it’s useful but there are some health safety concerns to keep in mind, which we’ll cover further down.
Using a baking sheet or parchment paper below the aluminum foil will reduce the damage from direct heating of the foil. Also, there will be no sticky mess, and will be easier to clean the air fryer after cooking.
Using a baking sheet (highly recommended) with aluminum foil is the method that we liked the most. The best part is that you can reuse the baking sheet over and over again.
Aluminum can be found all over our environment and is even in our food. Our bodies are well-equipped to handle low levels of it. The problem arises when you’re exposed to high levels of aluminum.
In acidic foods, high cooking temperatures have been found to increase the chances of aluminum making its way into the food being cooked on the foil. One study tested various types of meat wrapped in foil and found an increase in the concentration of aluminum increased by up to over 375% in one scenario.
If you need to cover something in the oven you can use a baking sheet, metal lid, parchment paper, silicone lid, or a silicone mat instead of aluminum foil.
Baking sheets are the best alternative to tin foil or aluminum foil. They serve the purpose of using foil in an air fryer and they are reusable. They also complement the foil cooking.
If you want to cover your food at has no foil, you can use parchment paper for the same purpose.
One of my family members wanted to cover lasagna and she didn’t have any foil, so I told her to use parchment paper as an alternative. It worked great for her.
Yes, you can use aluminum foil, metal, and some glass parts, which are oven-safe without any concern in your NuWave air fryer.
You can use aluminum foil in the air fryer. Make sure it doesn’t disrupt airflow and doesn’t make contact with heating elements. Some of the best alternatives are silicon baking paper and parchment paper.
